Born 1912 in London, England, eldest surviving daughter of Charles Leslie Rice (1879-1950) and Adelaide Franklin Crist (1880-1958). Her elder brother Robert Alfred Rice died as a child of four in 1914. Her younger brother Charles Leslie Rice Jr. (1919) graduated Princeton 1941. The family lived a transatlantic life: Charles Leslie Rice was a corporate executive with overseas postings. Barbara returned to the United States and married Boyden William Hindman on 11 April 1936 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. They had two sons: Robert W. Hindman (b. 1940 Trumbull CT) and William John 'Bill' Hindman (b. 12 December 1945 Syracuse NY, Brant's father). She died in 1997. Brant's paternal grandmother.
